Footie Fun Day winners

Congratulations to AC Meads on winning the Under 9s trophy on Sunday's Footie Fun Day with Inter Meads picking up the runners up plate. Congratulations also go to Rusthall Tigers for winning the Under 10 tournament trophy with Ashurst Wood Bulldogs runners up.

16 teams took part in the 14th annual Footie Fun Day which had to be limited to Umder 9 and Under 10 tournaments in the afternoon. The morning Under 7 and Under 8 tournaments had to be called off because Wasps had to play their last match of the season at home on Saturday following the extension of the Sussex County League season due to the bad weather. This meant that all the preparatory work for Footie Fun Day had to be done after the Rye match on Saturday evening and Sunday morning.

Wasps chairman Richard Tramontin said: "It was a very good day overall and the most important thing was that the kids enjoyed themselves, which they certainly seemed to do. Everyone was very positive in their feedback and we were grateful for the support of the volunteers, including the Imberhorne School sports leaders. It was unfortunate that we had to cancel the U7 and U8 tournaments, but we certainly hope to run them again next year."

East Grinstead Town 2, Rye United 1

Wasps finished their season with a fine display and a good win over Rye who had taken an early second half lead against the run of play. George Hiller-Jones scored both Wasps goals, the second an absolute cracker. [Match reportt to follow]. The win moves them up into 7th spot which they will retain unless Hassocks beat East Preston in their final match next Thursday.

Our congratulations go to Peacehaven who were crowned Sussex County League Division One Champions this afternoon following their 0-0 draw at Horsham YMCA.

Reserves finish top

Congratulations to Simon Boddie and Wasps reserves who will finish as Champions of the Suburban League South Division with one match still to play - tomorrow night at Lingfield. Corinthian could have caught Wasps with two games in hand but their draw tonight against Molesey means that Wasps finish top. They will now be promoted back to the Premier B Division.

Redhill 2, East Grinstead Town 0

Wasps could feel disappointed with coming away from second place Redhill tonight with nothing to show. If anything they edged the match but without creating much in front of goal. At the other end they failed to deal with a free kick to which Tyrone Pink put the finishing touch on 38 minutes and then an underhit back pass was intercepted by Gavin Gordon who needed two attempts to finish 13 minutes from the end..............[Full Match report]

With Corinthian reserves drawing 1 - 1 with Chessington & Hook tonight, Wasps Reserves would finish top in Suburban League South if they win at Lingfield on Friday night. A draw could be enough but then it could come down to goal difference. Corinthian have 3 matches still to play and Wasps' goal difference is 10 goals better. Corinthian play Molesey on Thursday.

East Grinstead Town 2, Worthing United 1

Despite playing some good football and dominating play throughout, Wasps made hard work of seeing off a spirited Worthing United side. George Hiller-Jones scored from a thunderous volley on 18 minutes, but the visitors shocked Wasps with an equaliser through Chad Milner with 15 minutes left. Ben Chick steadied Grinstead nerves 10 minutes later cutting in from the left and scoring from the tightest of angles..............[Full Match report]

Kevin Mankana had his penalty kick saved but was on hand to knock in the rebound to level the scores just before half time. [Match report to follow]

Rye United 3, East Grinstead Town 1

Ben Chick, Kieran Wilson and Mark Zydonik were missing from tonight's line-up as they couldn't make the trip to Rye in time and Simon Funnell was forced to name himself and the injured Dave Gellatly as the subs. Despite this and the dreadful condition of the pitch whcih had had two matches played on it on Saturday, Wasps should have taken the lead inside the first minute. Carlo Castrechino's free kick presented the unmarked Marc Pelling with a golden opportunity at the far post but he failed to find the target. Wasps did take the lead on 12 minutes when some good work down the right by George Hiller-Jones found Steve Major who beat his defender and slotted the ball inside the post. They then had another Major effort cleared off the line ten minutes later but soon afterwards Rye equalised and then went ahead much to the delight of a more than vociferous bench. Rye went further ahead 12 minutes into the second half but Wasps had chances to get back into the match.

Congratulations to Wasps Under 11s for reaching the Plate Final against Chesworth Rovers which will be held at Broadbridge Heath Lesiure Centre on Sunday 28th April (ko 9.15am).

Sidley United 0, East Grinstead Town 2

Wasps' match was switched to the GAC Stadium as a waterlogged Sidley pitch was declared unplayable early this morning. The rain returned before the earlier 2pm kick off time and the pitch was extremely wet and heavy particularly towards the end. Wasps scored two very good goals in the last twelve minutes through George Hiller-Jones and Dave Gellatly after some fine work down the left flank by Kieran Wilson and Ben Chick. East Grinstead Town 1, Peacehaven & Telscombe 3

Two defensive errors cost Wasps the match tonight in a very entertaining and even encounter against the league leaders. Grinstead went behind to a well finished Wes Tate goal on the half hour very much against the run of play. Steve Major scored an equaliser 8 minutes into the second half with a fine header from a pin point cross from Ben Chick after some great skill down the left flank. Joe Dryer and Tom Burton scored in the last 10 minutes to deny Wasps anything from the game although there was little to choose between the sides over the 90 minutes..............[Full Match report]

Lancing 4, East Grinstead Town 2

Wasps took the lead through Jon Hampson on 22 minutes against the run of play but Lancing grabbed an equaliser 6 minutes later. Simon Funnell went in at half time happy to be level but not at all pleased with his side's performance. Grinstead were much better in the second half but fell behind in the 65th minutes after John Sinclair was brought down as he was driving through towards the penaly box but the referee chose to wave play on and Darren Boswell latched onto a reultant clearance from what looked suspiciously like an offside position to put Lancing ahead. Steve Major who came on for the injured Sam Schaaf had two good scoring opportunities but Wasps fell further before pulling a goal back in injury time..............[Full Match report]

Lingfield 3, East Grinstead Town 1

Simon Funnell gave Reece Abbott and new signing Steve Ashmore starting debuts against neighbours Lingfield with three more of his team dropping out through injury after the Pagham match. Dave Gellatly, Michael Belli and Scott Johnston joined John Sinclair, Jon Hampson, Drew Cooney and Callum Christie on the injury list. Not the ideal way to go into a local derby but the lads on the pitch were equal to their hosts in the first half which saw little in the way of chances at either end. Wasps lost the match in a seven minute spell - a clearance from the Grinstead penalty area was pumped back upfield and Harry Sintim found himself at the end of the long ball got a foot to it and lobbed the advancing Mark Fox in the Wasps' goal. Two minutes later Fred Fleming put the hosts further ahead with a far post header from a well taken free kick by Garth Graham and then five minutes later disaster struck for Steve Ashmore who had a fine game up to then. He lost the ball in the middle of the park allowing Daryl Coleman to go through unchallenged and hit a low drive past Fox. Ben Chick pulled one back for Wasps in the 89th minute with a good run down the left cut inside his man and hit a shot past keeper Rob O'Hara at his near post..............[Full Match report]

Wasps started brightly and could have taken the lead against a strong Pagham side but an early penalty and a disastrous defensive mix up gave the visitors a two goal lead. Any thoughts of a second half comeback faded when Wasps went further behind following what most thought should have been an offside decision and further injury worries when both Michael Belli and Dave Gellatly had to be replaced. Pagham played some good football on a good surface and were much the better side on the day against a very much below par home side. Wasps came from behind twice to earn a point against Ringmer who themselves move up to second place in the league. Grinstead played some good football despite the very difficult pitch on which the guys at Ringmer worked hard to get the match on. Wasps went behind to an Aaron Watson strike on 31 minutes with Sam Schaaf equalising 7 minutes later. Another ex Grinstead player, Tony Reid looked suspiciously offside when he poached the home side's second goal on 59 minutes after Dave Gellatly should have put the visitors ahead but couldn't beat Tom Rand in the Ringmer goal. Michael Belli deservedly got the equaliser on 74 minutes and Wasps looked the more likely to grab the winner but it ended all square..............[Full Match report]

This was a much better all-round performance than on Saturday. John Sinclair and Kieran Wilson were in the starting line up after having missed Saturday's match and Mark Zydonic made his full debut. Ben Chick, George Hiller-Jones and Brendan Sebuliba were unavailable for tonight's match.

East Preston 5, East Grinstead Town 1

It was always going to be a tough task for Wasps to extend their 12 match unbeaten run by going to 'The Lash' and it proved to be unlucky 13. Kieran Wilson and John Sinclair were unavailable but Drew Cooney made a welcome comeback since his injury in the fourth match of the season. The effects of not having played for 5 weeks was all too evident at the beginning and the home side took the lead after 6 minutes through Terry Dodd after Wasps gave the ball away in midfield. Dodd, recently signed from Bognor made it 2-0 at half time and East Preston scored again early in the second half from Joe Shelley's unchallenged header from a very dubious free kick. Ben Chick got one back soon after and Sam Schaaf had 2 or 3 one-on-ones with the keeper which he did well to save. Dodd then added another 2 both again following Wasps' mistakes. East Grinstead Town 7, Crowborough Athletic 0

Wasps increased their unbeaten run to eleven this afternoon with an emphatic win over Crowborough. The heavy rain that started two hours before kick off put the match in jeopardy but the referee decalred match on after a final inspection just before the start. Wasps had the ball in the net in the first couple of minutes but it was ruled offside. They went ahead on 19 minutes throgh an own goal following a corner and then Rydon man of the match Ben Chick increased the lead 5 minutes later. It was five nil at half time with Grinstead playing some good football and goals from Sam Schaaf, Marc Pelling and Michael Belli. Wasps took their foot off the pedal in the second half but Ben Chick finished off a penetrating run into the box with a fine finish and substitute Sam Cane scored a seventh with 10 minutes to go. In truth, the scoreline could have been more and Mark Fox in the Grinstead goal only had one save to make towards the end. Six of the best

Wasps made it six consecutive league wins with a 6-0 victory at Shoreham. Following a shaky first ten minutes, Simon Funnell's side went on to dominate the match with some good controlled passing football and scored some superb goals. Sam Schaaf opened the scoring on 17 minutes from the penalty spot and John Sinclair pounced on a poor clearance from goalkeeper James Shaw a couple of minutes later to make it 2-0 which was the score at the break. The best goal of the match was a stunning strike from Carlo Castrechino on the hour mark with another great finish a minute later. East Grinstead Town U18s v Crowborough Athletic U18s - match abandoned after 71 minutes.

Wasps' Under 18's match was abandoned following a bad knee injury to Grinstead's Jack Woods. Paramedics were called and he was taken off to East Surrey hospital by ambulance at 9.30pm. Given the club's floodlight restrictions, the referee abandoned the match. The visitors were 2-0 up at the time although their second goal shouldn't have stood as the scorer handled the ball which he admitted as he came off the pitch at half time but the incident was unseen by the referee or his assistant. Wasps were awarded a penalty in the second half which the keeper saved.

News from the hospital is good. Jack's knee has been popped back in and there is nothing broken.

Stan Hogman Cup

At half-time during the home match against Chichester City on Saturday, Owen Capel was presented with the annual Stan Hogman Cup for the most improved player from East Grinstead Town's youth teams. The Cup was presented pitch-side by Richard Maynard, the current President of the East Grinstead Lion's Club.

Stan Hogman was a great lover of football at all levels and enjoyed watching the Wasps at the GAC stadium, Arsenal on the TV and his grandson at East Court. He played right-back for Temple Bar in his day and never lost his enthusiasm for fast flowing football.

Following Stan's passing in 2010, his family decided to set-up a memorial to him in the form of this annual award for most improved young player. Richard Tramontin, East Grinstead Town's Chairman said: "I am delighted that Stan's memory can be kept alive within the club by the annual presentation of this memorial cup."

Damon Capel, coach of EGTFC Under 10's during the 2011-12 season added: “Owen has progressed into one of the key members of the team. He wants to go training early and always wants to stay after and he's always keen to help other players.”

Presland brothers taken to hospital following car accident

On behalf of everyone at the club we send our best wishes for a speedy recovery to Chris and Harry Presland who had to be cut out of their car last night after it left the road and hit a tree on their way to football training.

Emergency services were quickly on the scene on Turners Hill Road and the brothers were taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton. Club chairman Richard Tramontin spoke to Pam and Andy, the boys' parents: "As you can imagine, they are extremely thankful that their sons have come out of the ordeal alive and with injuries that will eventually heal." he said. "It could have been far worse. Chris has a broken collar bone and shoulder and is undergoing further tests for neck and back pains. Harry suffered severe facial lacerations and is suspected of having broken some ribs. Neither have any recollection of the accident. Pam and Andy would like to thank everyone who has been in touch to pass on their best wishes."

Fireworks Display enjoyed by all

East Grinstead Town FC staged one of the largest and most successful community events in the town last Saturday when over 1,500 people attended their annual Fireworks Display.

The event has been going since 1997 and once again a big crowd enjoyed a fantastic display from AURORA FIREWORKS either side of sets from local band Naked Bass.

Opened by the Mayor of East Grinstead Liz Bennett, the event once again passed off trouble free.

Football club chairman Richard Tramontin said: “This year’s display was another level up from the previous year which was already extremely good. The synchronisation to music was fantastic particularly the colour coordination to Blue Sky and Gold and the Firestarter and Queen routines had some terrific low level effects and the Best of British theme was finished off with a flurry of red, white and blue .

"The band went down very well. I had comments that the event was terrific value for money in a safe environment. Thankfully the security guards, police and St John’s Ambulance had no incidents to deal with again. It was good to hear so many people like the town mayor Liz Bennett saying they thoroughly enjoyed the display and the music and she was amongst the last to leave.

"We are extremely grateful to Wickes for their generous sponsorship of the event. Without their backing we could not have put on such a good display with a live band."

Ken Thurgood

It is with deep regret that we announce the sad passing away of Ken Thurgood. He slipped away peacefully this morning with his wife Helen at his side.

Club Chairman Richard Tramontin said: "Kendo was only with the club for a short time as assistant manager to Tony Beckingham but he was truly loved by all; players, management, committee and supporters. It was a true personal honour to have known him and his paaing away is a tragic loss which will be felt by all who had ever met him. I will always remember him for his unique sense of humour and it was always a pleasure to be in his company.

On behalf of everyone at the club, I would like to pass on our heartfelt condolences to Helen and the family."

East Grinstead Town 1, Lingfield 2

Wasps were desperately unfortunate not to get anything out of today's local derby with Lingfield who scored from two penalty kicks and did not threaten Mark Fox in the Grinstead goal at any time in the match. Tom Saunders put Wasps ahead after pouncing on an error in the Lingfield defence and then later had his spot kick saved. Luke Piscina rattled the cross bar and the Lingfield keeper pulled off another couple of fine saves to deny the home team who had created more than enough chances to win the match. Even the Lingfield manager "Dixie" Dean said after the match: "Grinstead were desperately unlucky not to get a draw and our keeper pulled off a blinding save". Little consolation however from a match Wasps should have won..............[Full Match report]

East Grinstead Town 2, Bexhill United 4 - AET

Wasps were knocked out of the John O'Hara Cup by Division Two side Bexhill Utd after extra time. Despite missing a number of players through injury or unavailability Simon Funnel was unhappy with his team's performance and effort. Grinstead were left to rue a number of missed chances in the first half and they fell behind to a Will Dunstall goal on 20 minutes after some poor defending. Wasps then snatched an equaliser through George Hillier on 33 minutes. The visitors took the lead again on 65 minutes before Mannie Neville sent the game into extra time with a header from a corner kick with minutes left to play. Bexhill scored twice in extra time for a deserved victory against a poor performance from the home side. [Match report to follow]

East Grinstead Town Under 18s 2, Horley Town Under 18s 0

Wasps started their league campaign with a 2-0 victory at home. The opening phase of the match was scrappy but Wasps gradually settled and played some good football going in one up at the break with a debut goal from 15 year old Connor Tobin. Josh Smith increased Grinstead's lead soon after the restart and they also had a goal disallowed for an offside decision. Manager Bob Smith was pleased with the performance particularly the second half.

Team: Mark Johnston, Harry Maynard, Craig Goodsir, Bradley White, Aaron James-Bettle, Jamie Green, Rhys White, Carlos Biggeman, Josh Smith, Connor Tobin, Jordan Stone. Subs used:- Dan Hurley, Harry Simonis, Lewis Bowers; unused subs: Jamie Watts, Anthony Scott

Stan Hogman Cup

The winner of the Stan Hogman Cup for the most improved youth player for the 2011-12 season is Owen Capel from the Under 10 team.

This year's award was a close run thing with strong representations across the age ranges and a split decision between Owen and Matthew Meek from the U14's, which needed a third judge to be called in before a winner could be decided.

Congratulations to Owen Capel on winning the award and commiserations to Matthew Meek who gave Owen a good run for his money. All the finalists, Owen Capel, Matthew Meek, Oliver Woodhouse, Derek Alison and Elliot Williams did fantastically well to be nominated for this award and all deserve a mention for the effort and dedication they put into their game.

The Stan Hogman Cup is a handsome piece of silverware to have on the mantelpiece or in the trophy cabinet and Owen beat strong opposition to win Most Improved Youth Player in the club - well done Owen!

Lee Smith put the visitors in front on 20 minutes totally against the run of play with their only chance of the first half from a long high ball that Adam Davies volleyed into the air and it fell nicely to Smith who sweetly lobbed the oncoming Mark Fox. Peacehaven & Telsc 4, East Grinstead Town 1

Wasps began their league campaign with a defeat against a strong Peacehaven side likely to be contesting the title this season.

Despite the unavailability of four players, Grinstead gave a good account of themselves in a goalless first half and should have been awarded a penalty early on when Jon Hampson, one of three debutants, was brought down.

But Peacehaven took control with two goals in five minutes from Rob O'Toole and Ashley Rees at the start of the second half and Ben Sweatman headed a somewhat soft third on 63 minutes.

Grinstead rallied and sub Sam Cane volleyed home from Kieran Wilson's corner to reduce the arrears with 20 minutes to go but Rees slotted a fourth four minutes later to end any hopes of a Grinstead comeback..............[Full Match report]

East Grinstead Town Reserves 2, Ifield 2

Another very useful pre season game against a strong division 3 side who played some exciting football, which Wasps matched player for player. All subs were used and despite some people being played outside their comfort zone or best position, everyone had a decent game. Wasps went 1 up through a set piece in the first half, Noakes rising to head home a well delivered corner. Ifield then came out for the second half and quickly scored to draw level, then they won a penalty and went 2-1 up. However Wasps sorted themselves out having made 5 subs and Mankane got them back in it with our second goal. Despite some good play from both sides that's how it finished.

Reserves boss, Simon Boddie said:"I am happy with our progress, the side is developing well. We will be ready by KO on 21st August, but the team has some more work in preparation and with at least 2 more friendlies arranged the coaching staff are eager to fine tune with the players.

Team; Craig Lardent, Tom Green, S Jordan (James Ford 60 min), Kane Covele ( Dan Stoner 45 min), Reece Abbot, Clark Byrne capt., Eddie Hahn (Kevin Mankane 45 min), Marc Fulbook ( James Buckley 45 min), Ricky Panton ( George Hartwell 55 min), Sam Fildes.

East Grinstead Town U18s 0, Eastbourne Town U18s 2

Bob Smith's young side were desperately unlucky not to come out of tonight's friendly with at least a draw, particularly with their second half performance where they looked dominant and likely to grab an equaliser. But instead of drawing level they went two down just before the end when a decent shot was tipped onto the bar, hit the keeper on the back and went in. Smith and assiatants Kevin Dunster and Chris Presland were very pleased with the team's second half performace.
Team: Anthony Scott (gk), Tommy Dixon, Jack Osborn, Aaron James-Bettle, Michael Ward, Carlos Biggeman, Jack Hope, Dan Hurley, Harry Holmes, Josh Sacre-Hursey, Kofi Summerfield. Subs, (all used), Mark Johnston (gk), Harry Maynard, Jamie Watts, Jamie Green, Jordan Stone, Bradley White, Connor Tobin, Lewis Bowers, Rhys White, Sam Armitage, Salvatore Pagnani, Josh Smith.

Wasps Under 18s first pre-season friendly had to be moved at short notice to the GAC Stadium. Bob Smith's squad which included a number of Under 16s went behind in the first half but then started to gel and finished worthy 4 - 1 winners, with Josh Smith scoring two and Michael Ward and Sam Armitage getting one apiece. Their next friendly is this coming Tuesday against Eastbourne Town at the GAC Stadium (ko 6.30pm).

Team: Jamie Green (capt), Rhys White, Josh Smith, Harry Maynard, Bradley White, Michael Ward, Lewis Bowers, Salvatore Pagnani, Jack Osborn, Tommy Dixon, Jack Hope, Dan Hurley, Mark Johnston, Sam Armitage, Jamie Watts.

East Grinstead Town Reserves 2, South Park Reserves 1

Simon Boddie was very pleased with his squad's performance today and with the way players are gelling and getting accustomed to his style of play. They stepped their performance up in the second half and took a two goal lead through Reece Abbot and Hussan Neri before conceding to the visitors towards the end of the match.

Team: Craig Lardent, Tom Green, Sam Jordan, Lee Champion (Dan Stoner), John Noakes, Clark Byrne capt, Reece Abbot (James Ford), Hassan Neri, James Buckley (Ricky Pontin), George Hatswell (Kevin Mankane), Sam Fildes (Marc Fulbro).

East Grinstead Town 2, Burgess Hill 2

Wasps finished off their pre-season with a display that pleased boss Simon Funnell and Mike Cramp. They fell behind to two soft first half goals, the second of which looked to be way offside but things clicked into place in the second half with Tom Saunders scoring from the penalty spot after he had been brought down and Mannie Neville heading home the equaliser. Dave Gellatly looked as if he was going to clinch victory right at the death but he just narrowly missed the far post.

Funnell and Cramp had been working hard to get Wasps playing the way they did in the second half and can nowlook forward to the opening match of the league campaign on 4th August against Peacehaven.

Post match comments

Boss Simon Funnell had this to say after yesterday's friendly: " I am happy in general with our performances in the last three friendlies despite the results. All the goals we have conceded have been of our own doing and no one has actually broken us down, so if we can cut out the silly mistakes and be a bit more creative in the final third we have the making of a decent side. I am pleased with all the signings we have made and hope to make 1 or 2 more and we are all raring to go for the new season."

Saturday's team was: Fox, Hampson, Cooney, Aherne, O'Neill, Piscina, Mannie Neville, Etherington, Tobin, Wilson, Hillier, subs: Covele, Champion, Cane, Noakes, Davies.

Reserves team manager Simon Boddie said: "A very useful game allowing the new management to view players in a match situation. This was our first 90 minutes and allowed the players to play an opposition that were organised and physically strong. We adopted a 4;2;3;1 formation which was new to most and generally it worked quite well. Sam Fildes gave us the lead in the first half and whilst we weren't troubled much at the back young Craig Lardent tipped one just over the bar before half time.

In the second half we made 2 x double substitutions at 55 min bringing on Kevin Mankane & Tom Turner for Ricky Panton and James Buckley then in 65 minute we introduced Dave Stoner and Eddie for Sam Jordan and Reece Abbot. Tom Turner immediately weighed in with our second goal. However we then suffered a 15 minute spell of chaos and allowed Woodstock to score twice. A little instruction from the bench and we settled again, the game ending 2-2.

The result doesn't really reflect the game and had it been a league match, we would have been disappointed, but it allowed all the players to get a run out in the first of our pre season friendlies. All in all a good afternoon's work."

Team: C Lardent, T Green, S Jordan, M Pelling, Miles Neville, R Abbot, C Byrne (captain), R Panton, J Buckley, H Neris, S Fildes; Subs; D Stoner, T Turner, K Mankane, E Tester

Wasps travelled to Phoenix Sports this afternoon in a friendly against a side managed by the ex Grinstead team of Tony Beckingham, Steve O'Boyle and Tony Prime.

Despite dominating large spells of the game and in particular the first half hour of the second half, Wasps only found the back of the net once through George Hillier in his first match for the club but conceded in the first 20 seconds of the match and lost to a soft second goal from a free kick 30 yards out which was met by an unchallenged header at the far post.

There were a lot of positives for Simon Funnell to take away including another 90 minutes for Luke Piscina and 75 minutes for Mannie Neville who both haven't played for nigh on two seasons. Both George Hillier and Liam Aherne looked very assured in their debut matches.

Grinstead: Seb Bos, Lee Champion, Liam Aherne, Drew Cooney, Noel Etherington, Luke Piscina, Mannie Neville, Dave Gellatly, Jez Tobin, Kieran Wilson, George Hillier; Subs all used: John Noakes, Sam Cane, John Hampson, Sam Rintoul, Craig Lardent (gk)

Sponsors back Wasps

East Grinstead Town FC will be wearing the logo of Forest-Row based construction company Rydon on their shirts for the 22nd successive year when the new County League season kicks off on August 4.

A delighted chairman Richard Tramontin revealed that both Rydon and GAC had renewed their sponsorship agreements with GAC backing the club with naming rights for the club’s ground, the GAC Stadium.

He said: “In these difficult economic times every penny is vital for clubs at our level and we are absolutely delighted that Rydon and GAC continue to give the club such wonderful backing.

“There has never been such an enduring sponsorship relationship in football at any level as the one the club have had with Rydon since 1991 and we are absolutely thrilled that they continue to back community sport and in particular the town’s football club.

“In addition to the wonderful support of Rydon and GAC, we are delighted to confirm Duaris will continue to sponsor our reserve team in the Suburban League next season and that Southern Sheeting and Mid Sussex Timber have also extended their sponsorship agreement.”

Wasps kick off their County League campaign on August 4 at Peacehaven before entertaining Hailsham three days later while they have been drawn at home to Raynes Park Vale in the first qualifying round of the FA Vase.

On Saturday Wasps lost 4-3 to Kent County League side Cray Valley in their opening pre-season friendly.

Luke Piscina and Tom Saunders, who have both returned to the club, were among those in action as Grinstead came from 3-1 down to level at 3-3 before losing to a last-minute goal.

Saunders scored the first before limping off with ankle ligament damage and in the second half Liam Hunter and Jez Tobin were also on the score-sheet.

Several players who have been attending pre-season training were not involved and Funnell is pleased with the way his squad is coming together.

Drew Cooney, who had cruciate ligament surgery last season, and Mannie Neville, who missed the last two seasons because of injury, both took part.

Funnell said: “It was a good workout. I was pleased with our work-rate and commitment and we got a lot out of the game. It was a shame to lose in the last minute but pre-season is about fitness and pattern of play, not results. Results are important from August 4 onwards.”

Grinstead play another friendly in Kent this Saturday at Invicta League Phoenix Sports (1pm), who are managed by former boss Tony Beckingham, and next Tuesday they go to Oakwood (7.15pm).

Meanwhile Wasps’ under-18s are looking for new players to add to their squad for the forthcoming Southern Youth League season and in particular a goalkeeper. Preparations will include a friendly against Crawley Town on August 14. Training takes place on Tuesdays and Thursdays and anyone who would like to join the leading youth team in the town should contact Manager Bob Smith on 07850 779937.

Fixtures

The First few fixtures of the 2012/13 campaign have been released. Wasps travel to Peacehaven on the opening Saturday, 4th August, and then entertain Hailsham Town on the following Tuesday at the GAC Stadium. The First Round tie in the John O'Hara Cup will be on Saturday 11th August at the GAC Stadium against Bexhill United. August bank holiday sees neighbours Lingfield making the short trip for an 11am kick off.

Simon Funnell was pleased with his squad's attitude, committment and play in this afternoon's friendly at Cray Valley. He started with a 4-3-3 formation but after conceding twice in the first 15 minutes reverted to a 4-4-2. Tom Saunders pulled one back for Wasps on 34 minutes after some good work from Luke Piscina who found Ben Burns on the left flank. His cross was met by Saunders who twisted his ankle in the process and soon left the field of play with what appeared to be ligament damage. Wasps went 3-1 down after 12 minutes of the second half but then goals from Jez Tobin and Liam Hunter levelled the scores only for the hosts to clinch victory five minutes from time with a low shot that hit the inside of Craig Lardent's near post went across the line hit the other post and went in. The club's thanks go to everyone at Cray Valley for their hospitality.
Grinstead: Mark Fox, John Noakes, Noel Etherington, Mannie Neville, Adam Davies, Drew Cooney, Ashley Dugdale, Dave Gellatly, Luke Piscina, Tom Saunders, Ben Burns; used subs Craig Lardent, Jez Tobin, Blair Cooney, Andy Goodwin, Lee Champion, Liam Hunter, Sam Cane

Cup draws

Wasps have been drawn at home in the First Round Qualifying of the FA Carlsberg Vase. They will host Raynes Park Vale on Saturday 1st September with the winners travelling to either Warlingham or Lordswood in the Second Round Qualifying on the 15th September, with the winners of that tie going to Egham Town in the First Round Proper on Saturday 13th October.

Wasps have been drawn at home to Bexhill United in the First Round of the John O'Hara Cup - date to be announced. The winners will travel to Rustington in the second round.

Unfortunately the club's re-appearance in the FA Cup will have to wait until the 2013/14 season despite an appeal to the FA.

Simon Funnell and his assistant & coach Mike Cramp have been very pleased with the first two weeks of pre-season training. Funnell said "all the players have shown great committment and enthusiasm and are itching to get a match under their belts." He will have a 20 man squad tomorrow when they travel to Cray Valley for their first pre-season friendly.

Physio sought

The First Team physio recently appointed by Simon Funnell has unfortunately had to relinquish the post before pre-season starts. Jason Knight was very keen on joining Simon's team, but additional competition training that he will be undertaking and his pursuit of more qualifications has meant that he had to reluctantly quit before he had even started.

With pre-season training starting next Tuesday (26th June), Simon Funnell is now keen on finding a new phsyio so any interested candidates are asked to get in touch - email.
Goalkeeping coach and assistant manager Tony Prime is leaving the club to join Tony Beckingham and Steve O'Boyle at Phoenix Sports. Primey joined Wasps with Tony Beckingham when he took over from Steve Johnson as First Team manager and Boyley was part of Becks' team before he left to manage Erith & Belvedere. The club would like to thank Primey for all that he has done including coaching the youth teams' keepers and helping keep stocks of 1664 down. We will be meeting up with the ex Wasps trio for a pre-season double header on Saturday 14th July.

Next Tuesday's first pre-season training session is for all the senior section and includes the Under 18s. Bob Smith has urged any players who would like a chance to join the Under 18s to come along. They will be having a meet and greet at the club at 7pm on 26th June.

Former Wasps’ player Mike Cramp is returning to the GAC Stadium as part of a new-look management team unveiled by manager Simon Funnell.

Cramp, who played alongside Funnell at Grinstead in 2008 under former boss Steve Johnson, will be his Assistant Manager and First Team Coach having been coach at Kent County League club Hildenborough where he finished his playing career, and whom he led to the First Division title last season as manager.

He said: “When I played with Si I thought he would become a good manager and I am looking to learn from him. We will set high standards next season because with the potential the club has we want to be taking the club forward.”

Also joining Funnell’s backroom staff is Jason Knight as physiotherapist after Pam Presland retired at the end of last season after more than 12 years in the position.

Grinstead have also appointed Simon Boddie as reserve team manager together with Matt Drew, who will be Boddie’s assistant in the Suburban League.

Boddie a UEFA B coach was reserve-team manager at Three Bridges where he spent almost 14 years starting with 4 years as Under 18s coach. He also had a two season spell as assistant manager at Horley Town in the Combined Counties League premier division. Drew has worked alongside Boddie at both Three Bridges and Horley. Boddie said: "We are both really looking forward to being part of the team at East Grinstead Town and the challenge in assisting to move the club onwards and upwards."

Funnell added: “I’m delighted with the appointments that have been made and I believe we have a really strong backroom team in place at the football club.”

Grinstead return to pre-season training on June 26 with the opening friendly on July 7 away to Kent League side Cray Valley.

The Sussex County League season will start on Saturday, August 4.

New season

The recent extremely wet spell hampered the end-of-season pitch renovation to the extent that instead of being a week ahead of normal timings as originally planned, work was completed two weeks later than normal. Final seeding and fertilising was completed at the beginning of last week and the GAC Stadium pitch is now targetted to be ready for play for the last week in July.

Full pre-season training starts in earnest on Tuesday 26th June with the first friendly currently organised for 7th July away against Cray Valley.

First Team Manager Simon Funnell is back from holiday and is keen to finalise the appointment of a Reserve Team Manager and a First Team Physio. Any late applicants should contact Simon as early as possible this week on 07789636096.
